From what I think, sociology is a comprehensive subjects of studying society and people. There is no exclusive scientific method to do the research; it basically is the study through observation, analysis and experiences. As C. Wright Mills said in his book “Sociological Imagination”, sociological imagination is "the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society. It enhances our rationale by acquiring more information about the world and figuring out what is really happening there.
This chapter introduces the social differentiation and social stratification along with the class structure of the nation. The most interesting idea in this chapter is that sociologist considers poverty “as caused by social structural conditions, including unemployment, gender inequality in the work place, and the absence of support for child care for working parents.” When it comes to the topic of economic inequality, this phrase will commonly be used “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.”
This article written by Cathy Young mentions one of the causes of poverty—“culture of poverty”. Yes, there are some historical reasons that offer African-Americans unequal working opportunities, but a variety self-defeating habits and behaviors cannot be dismissed (2005).
The "Cycly of Poverty" (2009) is an interesting video illustrating the cycle of poverty and provide the example of breaking the cycle.
This is a good website that discussed the social, political, economic and environmental issues all over the world. There are a lot of great information about causes of poverty not only in US but worldwide.
Mick Jagger (1987) writes about "Let's Work" to inspire to work: No sitting down on your butt
the world don't owe you
No sitting down in a rut
I wanna show you
Don't waste your energy on making enemies
Just take a deep breath and work your way up.
Let's work
be proud
stand tall
touch the clouds
Man and woman
be free
let's work
kill poverty.
Let's work
be proud
stand tall
touch the clouds
Man and woman
be free
let's work
kill poverty.
You're sitting down on your butt
and you get greedy
Started to lose your nuts
don't you look seedy
Can generosity bring you humility? So take a deep breath.
Ain't gonna sweat for you
ain't gonna sigh for you
Ain't gonna cry for you
if you're lazy.
Ain't gonna slave for you
ain't gonna hurt For yau
It iust won't work for you
if you're lazy.
Let's work
A Taiwanese was examined when he entered US, and the Customs officer found seven underwears in his luggage. When the officer asked him why, he answered “Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday,” which meant one for each day. Then here came a French who brought five underwears. When he was asked the same question, he said “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.” “How about Saturday and Sunday?” the officer asked. “No wear.” The officer understood that French were romantic that they didn’t wear on weekend. After that, an Indian came in with 12 underwears. The officer got confused and asked why, he said slowly “January, February, March, April …” This was just a joke that I saw on the internet few days ago, but it made me think about the small distinguish among countries. A lot of people mentioned “foreign,” “other countries,” “divided” when they talked about culture. With the highly developed economic globalization process, multiculturalism societies grow up against this background. However, culture is so complex that it could be considered either the most different civilization or something that we have in common, no matter how differently it form, respecting and understanding are only way that we can see its uniqueness and beauty.
Even though every country celebrates the New Year in its own traditional ways, they have the same purpose and wish for future, which is praying for the happiness to live in a better life. Culture was rich and varied, and the essential feature is its uniqueness. We share understanding and respecting to each other; therefore, there would be less argument and contradiction in the whole world.
This chapter focuses on the Families and religions. Sociological perspectives of family issues are demonstrated through diversity families. The fact of that America has the highest marriage and divorce rate than any other industrialized countries draw my attention. Nowadays, families are facing variety challenges and divorce is becoming one of the main issues
The Evolution of High Divorce Rate This article written by Deborah Moskovitch explains the high divorce rate compared with 50 years ago. It reasons why people get married today is totally different than before. “The purpose of marriage has become much more psychological and less pragmatic, and when things start to go wrong, they will question if the partner is their soul mate.”
This "TOP 10 Reasons for Divorce" (2010) is a short video ranking top 10 reasons for divorce.
Websites: http://www.divorceguide.com It’s a website providing professional divorce information. It also explains why is the current divorce rate increasing in America and offers advice to deal with relationship that is in trouble.
This chapter talks about culture and media, starting with the definition and elements of culture. The ideas of cultural diversity and cultural change are also introduced in this chapter. Dragged along with globalization, we are facing more culture conflicts than before. It seems necessary to understand and respect the culture differences among different countries.
This article written by Sunniva Heggertveit-Aoudia,gives a brief list of the countries that have laws around disadvantaged groups of the population. Singapore is a good example of a nation who embraces its diversity successfully (2011).
The "Culture Diversity" (2009) defines what culture diversity is, talks about types of differences it covers and tips for communicating with culture awareness.
